Rules Of Surfing Competition

Jun 04, 2023

Surfing events are generally divided into short board, long board men's, women's singles events, and men's and women's team events. The duration of the event is adjusted by the competition committee based on the wave conditions, and the best conditions are selected for the competition. The overall duration of the event generally ranges from 1 day to 10 days. (Therefore, the competition cannot be watched every day, and it is necessary to pay attention to the real-time broadcast status updates of the competition). Individual events are held based on individual rounds of promotion. Generally, the top two contestants with the best results in their group are selected in groups of 3 or 4 people to advance to the next round.
The rules of the ISA World Surfing Association have a resurrection round (3 or 4 players in the first round can enter the resurrection round to continue to strive for the top two until the final combination is combined). The rules of the WSL World Surfing Union have only one Repechage, and the top two players in the resurrection round can enter the main round to continue the competition. In surfing competitions, the maximum score for each wave is 10 points. The best two wave scores of each group of athletes are selected as the final score. A score of 0.1-1.9 is considered poor, a score of 2-3.9 is considered passing, a score of 4-5.9 is considered average, a score of 6-7.9 is considered good, and an score of 8-10 is considered excellent. Of course, the rating will fluctuate and adjust according to the wave conditions. The referee team generally consists of 3-5 law enforcement judges, 1 presiding judge, 1 rotating judge, and 1 priority judge. The duration of each group's competition varies from 15 minutes to 35 minutes, and is adjusted accordingly based on the frequency of waves on the competition venue.
Fouls and penalties
Wave snatching violation (in most cases, if one party has priority or starts first and slides in one direction without priority, the other party is considered a wave snatching violation)
Snake water skiing foul (when the other athlete skis around the other athlete from outside and attempts to catch the waves, such a situation may result in a snake water skiing foul)
Foul in water skiing obstruction (if the other player obstructs the path of the surfer's passage while skiing back to the wave point, affecting their chances of scoring, they will be awarded a water skiing foul)
Foul in starting water skiing (if the other athlete attempts to ski and catch a wave, causing the path of the wave to create a white wave and affecting the scoring opportunity of the priority athlete, the water skiing violation will be deemed)
Priority
The rule of priority has been widely used in major international competitions, aiming to ensure that every athlete has the right to choose the waves first at least once. In law enforcement, it requires the adjudication team to establish a special priority jurisdiction to supervise the changes in priority. Due to the rapid and irregular changes in priority in competitions, higher demands have been placed on judges, law enforcement, and the flexible use of athletes. Proficient use of priority by athletes will maximize their chances of winning the competition, and vice versa.
